Chapter 2 - The Whisper That Broke Us

The silence in the ballroom stretched out, suffocating and heavy. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. Two hundred pairs of eyes were glued to the sweetheart table where Daniel and I sat.
I turned to Daniel, my hands trembling. I expected him to stand up. I expected him to rip the microphone away from his mother and apologize to my family.
Instead, he leaned toward me, his breath warm against my ear.
"Just agree for now," he whispered nervously. "We can talk about it later."
Something inside my chest snapped. A cold, terrifying realization washed over me, freezing the blood in my veins. The man sitting next to me wasn't caught off guard. He wasn't shocked.
"You knew about this?" I asked, my voice shaking but loud enough for the front row to hear.
He refused to meet my eyes, looking anywhere but at me.
"Mom just thinks it would make things easier for us," he muttered, adjusting his perfectly tailored tuxedo. "She just wants to make sure I have security, Emma. Please, don't make a scene."
Margaret smiled from the stage, looking like a queen who had just checkmated her opponent. "Marriage requires sacrifice, sweetheart. If you truly love my son, none of this should be difficult for you to accept."
I stared at Daniel's pathetic, cowardly posture. For months, he had made little passive-aggressive comments. He complained that my title sounded more impressive than his. He whined that my house never truly felt like "ours" because my name was on the deed. He kept reminding me that his mother believed a good wife should be more accommodating.
I had dismissed those comments as temporary insecurities. I thought my love and support would heal his fragile ego. Now, sitting in my white dress, the horrific truth hit me like a freight train.

They weren't insecurities. They were warnings. And I had ignored every single one of them.
I let out a breathless, disbelieving laugh. "Are you both out of your minds?"
