Chapter 1 - The Wedding Ultimatum

|
I was still breathing heavily, my heart fluttering with what I thought was newlywed bliss, when the music suddenly stopped. The crystal chandeliers of the Boston Grand Hotel cast a warm glow over the two hundred guests. I was wearing my dream wedding dress—a silk gown that had taken six months to tailor perfectly. The champagne was poured. The band was ready for our first dance.
Then, my future mother-in-law, Margaret Collins, stepped onto the mahogany stage.
She took the microphone from the bandleader with a sickeningly sweet smile. At first, I thought she was going to give a standard, teary-eyed mother-of-the-groom speech. I squeezed Daniel’s hand, expecting a heartwarming moment.
Instead, Margaret’s eyes locked onto mine. They were cold, calculating, and completely devoid of warmth.
"Before we celebrate this union," Margaret announced, her voice echoing through the silent ballroom, "there are three conditions that Emma needs to publicly accept before officially joining the Collins family."
A ripple of nervous laughter spread through the crowd. I forced a smile, assuming this was some kind of awkward, old-fashioned joke. But Margaret didn't laugh.
"First," she said, her voice sharp as glass, "Daniel should immediately take over your operations director position. A husband needs to be the head of the household. Second, the deed to your house needs to be transferred into his name by Monday morning. And third, once you’re married, you need to understand your place. This family comes first. Always."
The ballroom went dead silent. You could hear a pin drop.

I had spent eight grueling years building my career at a top-tier logistics company, fighting tooth and nail for my director title. The house she was talking about? I bought it three years before I even knew Daniel existed. I paid the down payment, I did the renovations, and I never asked his family for a single dime.
I looked at Daniel, my chest tight. I waited for him to take the mic. I waited for him to defend me. I waited for the man I loved to protect our future. He just stared at the floor.
