Chapter 13 - The Apology Without a Request

|

I realized something ugly about myself, Emma, Daniel’s letter continued. I was wildly, deeply insecure about your success. I loved that you were ambitious, but as your career eclipsed mine, I felt smaller. Instead of working harder on myself, I looked for ways to bring you down to my level so I could feel like a 'man.'

My mother preyed on that insecurity. She convinced me that a real husband had to hold the financial and professional reigns, or he would lose his wife's respect. I was so terrified of losing you to your own greatness that I tried to trap you.

I asked the lawyer about the prenup because I was a coward. I was planning a safety net for my ego, not our marriage.

You were right to walk away. You were right to humiliate me. I needed to be broken down so I could clearly see the toxic, manipulative environment I was raised in. My father finally stood up to my mother, and their marriage is currently hanging by a thread. I moved out of the city to start over.

I am writing this to tell you that you are brilliant, you are strong, and you deserved a partner who celebrated you, not a boy who wanted to own you.

I flipped to the final page.

At the end of the day, I finally understand my greatest failure. I didn’t lose you because you refused to compromise on the wedding day. I lost you because I asked you to compromise everything that made you who you were.

I wish you a lifetime of the happiness I couldn't give you.

Daniel.

I read that final sentence three times. The tightness in my chest slowly dissolved. There was no manipulation here. No plea for forgiveness. Just a broken man who had finally woken up.

I folded the letter neatly, walked into my home office, and placed it in the bottom drawer of my desk.

I forgave him. But forgiveness didn’t mean returning. It meant I no longer carried anger into my future. I was completely free.
