Chapter 10 - Margaret's Desperate Move

|
Three weeks after the canceled wedding, I was finally settling into my new routine. The promotion kept me busy, and the exhaustion of the new role left me no time to dwell on the past.
It was a rainy Thursday evening. I was sitting in my kitchen, reviewing supply chain logistics on my laptop, when the doorbell aggressively rang.
I glanced at the security monitor mounted on the wall. My blood instantly boiled. Standing on my front porch, holding a soaked umbrella and glaring at the camera, was Margaret Collins.
I didn't want to open the door, but I knew she wouldn't leave until she caused a scene. I locked my screen, walked to the front door, and yanked it open, leaving the heavy chain engaged.
"What do you want, Margaret?" I asked coldly.
"Open the door, Emma," she demanded, her aristocratic facade completely replaced by desperate anger. "We need to talk about the financial damages you caused my family."
I let out a harsh laugh. "Financial damages? I paid for eighty percent of that wedding."
"You ruined Daniel's reputation!" she snapped, pressing her face close to the gap in the door. "He had to take a leave of absence from work because he was too humiliated to face his colleagues. You owe us the remaining twenty percent of the deposits, and I want compensation for the emotional distress you caused him."
I stared at her, completely astounded by her delusion.
"You came to the house you tried to steal from me, to demand money for the wedding you destroyed?" I asked, my voice dripping with pure venom.
"You owe my son!" she screamed, dropping her umbrella on the porch.

I reached up and unlatched the chain. I threw the door wide open, stepping out onto the porch to face her directly. Margaret instinctively took a step back, startled by my sudden aggression.
"I don't owe your son a damn thing," I said, my voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "But I will give you a piece of advice."
