Chapter 4 – “The Last Game of Vivian Moretti”

The photograph remained on Alejandro’s desk for six hours.

He did not move it.

He did not touch it.

He simply stared at it.

Because sometimes the most painful truths were not the ones that shocked you.

They were the ones that confirmed the fear you refused to believe.

The picture showed Elena standing outside the mansion on the night she disappeared.

Her face was terrified.

Beside her stood Marcus Vale.

The man Alejandro trusted.

The man who had spent three years helping him search for his missing wife.

The man who had sat across from him during countless meetings and said:

“We’ll find her, Alejandro.”

“We won’t stop.”

“We’ll bring Elena home.”

Every word.

Every promise.

A lie.

Alejandro’s hands tightened around the photograph until the paper bent.

Behind him, Elena stood silently.

She had seen the picture.

And unlike Alejandro…

She was not surprised.

“Tell me.”

His voice was quiet.

Too quiet.

Elena looked down.

“Alejandro…”

“Tell me.”

She closed her eyes.

“I knew he was there.”

The silence that followed felt like an explosion.

Alejandro slowly turned.

“You knew?”

Elena nodded.

“Not everything.”

“Then what?”

Her voice shook.

“That night, before Vivian took me…”

She swallowed.

“Marcus was there.”

Alejandro stared at her.

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

A painful expression crossed her face.

“Because Vivian told me if I spoke about Marcus, she would make sure you died.”

Alejandro froze.

Elena continued.

“She said Marcus was dangerous.”

She looked at the photograph.

“She said he wasn’t like her.”

“Meaning?”

Elena’s eyes filled.

“Meaning Vivian was cruel because she hated me.”

A pause.

“But Marcus…”

She whispered:

“Marcus was cruel because he enjoyed having power over people.”

The investigation changed immediately.

Marcus Vale was no longer a financial criminal.

He was a threat.

A dangerous one.

Daniel’s team searched every known location connected to Marcus.

His house.

His accounts.

His properties.

Nothing.

He had vanished perfectly.

Like a man who had been planning his escape for years.

But Alejandro knew something.

People like Marcus always left something behind.

They were too arrogant not to.

And arrogance was always the weakness of powerful men.

“He’ll come back.”

Elena looked at Alejandro.

“You sound certain.”

“I am.”

“Why?”

“Because men like him don’t disappear.”

He looked at the photograph.

“They return when they think they’ve won.”

Three days later, Marcus returned.

Not physically.

Publicly.

The news exploded.

CASTILLO INTERNATIONAL ACCUSED OF FINANCIAL FRAUD

Every television channel carried the story.

Every newspaper.

Every online platform.

Suddenly, Alejandro was no longer the victim.

He was the suspect.

Documents appeared showing illegal transfers.

Fake contracts.

Hidden accounts.

And every piece of evidence pointed toward one person.

Alejandro Castillo.

Elena watched the news in silence.

“They’re trying to destroy you.”

Alejandro stood beside her.

“Yes.”

“Because of me?”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“Because of what we know.”

The phone rang.

Daniel.

Alejandro answered.

“What happened?”

His lawyer’s voice was tense.

“Marcus released the evidence publicly.”

“What evidence?”

“Documents proving money was transferred from Castillo accounts.”

Alejandro frowned.

“But those accounts were controlled by Marcus.”

“I know.”

“Then why are they showing my name?”

A pause.

“Because the signatures are yours.”

Alejandro froze.

“What?”

Daniel lowered his voice.

“They forged everything.”

Within hours, the entire world turned against him.

Investors panicked.

The company’s stock collapsed.

Business partners abandoned him.

The same people who once praised Alejandro Castillo now called him a criminal.

And at the center of the storm…

Was Vivian Moretti.

Because while everyone watched Alejandro fall…

Vivian disappeared.

Again.

But this time…

She left a message.

A video.

It appeared online at midnight.

Alejandro and Elena watched it together.

Vivian sat in a luxurious hotel room.

Calm.

Perfect.

Like the woman who had controlled everything from the shadows.

“Hello, Alejandro.”

Her smile was cold.

“I know you’re angry.”

She laughed.

“But anger makes people careless.”

Alejandro watched without blinking.

“You think you defeated me.”

Vivian continued.

“You found Elena.”

A pause.

“You exposed me.”

Another smile.

“But you forgot something.”

She leaned closer to the camera.

“You still don’t know why Elena was chosen.”

Elena stiffened.

Alejandro noticed.

“Chosen?”

Vivian continued.

“Three years ago, I didn’t choose Elena because I hated her.”

Silence.

“I chose her because of who she was.”

Alejandro looked at Elena.

Vivian smiled.

“Ask your wife about her father’s final research.”

The video ended.

“Elena.”

She didn’t answer.

“Elena.”

Slowly, she looked at him.

“My father was investigating something.”

“What?”

She hesitated.

“A company.”

“Which company?”

Her voice was barely audible.

“Castillo Holdings.”

The room went silent.

Alejandro felt like the ground disappeared beneath him.

“My father believed someone inside your family destroyed him.”

“And you believed him?”

“No.”

“Then why hide it?”

“Because I loved you.”

The answer was immediate.

Honest.

Painful.

“I met you before I knew who you were.”

Alejandro stared.

“I didn’t know your family name mattered.”

She stepped closer.

“I fell in love with you.”

“And then?”

“Then I discovered the truth.”

“What truth?”

Her eyes filled.

“That my father’s biggest enemy was the family of the man I loved.”

Alejandro spent the night searching.

Not Vivian.

Not Marcus.

His own family history.

Old business records.

Old legal documents.

Old newspapers.

And eventually…

He found it.

A company called Moretti Industries.

Owned by Elena’s father.

Twenty years ago, it had collapsed.

Officially because of bankruptcy.

But the truth was different.

A competitor had stolen their technology.

Their clients.

Their contracts.

The company that benefited the most?

Castillo Holdings.

Alejandro stared at the screen.

“No.”

But the evidence was there.

His family had destroyed hers.

Not him.

But his name.

His bloodline.

His legacy.

“Elena…”

She entered the room.

She saw his face.

And immediately understood.

“You found it.”

He nodded.

“My family.”

He could barely speak.

“My family ruined yours.”

Elena looked down.

“That’s why I never wanted you to know.”

“Why didn’t you leave me?”

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“Because you were not them.”

Alejandro looked at her.

“You still believed that?”

“Yes.”

“After everything?”

“Yes.”

The answer broke him.

Because Elena had spent three years trapped.

But she still protected him.

The next morning, Vivian called.

Alejandro answered.

“I knew you would find it.”

Her voice was calm.

“Where are you?”

“Does it matter?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I want you to hear me when you lose everything.”

Alejandro smiled coldly.

“You think I lost?”

Vivian laughed.

“You lost your company.”

“No.”

“Your reputation.”

“No.”

“Your family’s legacy.”

Alejandro looked at Elena.

“No.”

Vivian became quiet.

“What?”

“You made the same mistake everyone else made.”

“Which is?”

“You thought power came from money.”

A pause.

“It doesn’t.”

Alejandro’s voice hardened.

“It comes from knowing who you are.”

Vivian’s tone changed.

“You sound like Elena.”

“Because she taught me something you never understood.”

“What?”

“That love is not weakness.”

Silence.

Then Vivian whispered:

“You really think this ends with me?”

“No.”

Alejandro looked toward the window.

“I know it doesn’t.”

“Good.”

A smile entered her voice.

“Because I’m not the final enemy.”

The call ended.

That evening, Elena received a package.

Inside was an old diary.

Her father’s diary.

The one she thought was destroyed.

Her hands trembled as she opened it.

The first page contained only one sentence.

“If anything happens to me, find Alejandro Castillo. He is the only person who can uncover the truth.”

Elena stopped breathing.

Alejandro looked at her.

“What?”

She turned the page.

And both of them froze.

Because her father had written:

“The Castillo family did not destroy me.”

Another page.

“Someone inside the family did.”

Another.

“Someone who wanted the Castillo name.”

And finally…

The last entry.

Written one day before his disappearance.

“The person behind everything is the one Alejandro trusts most.”

Alejandro slowly looked at the photograph again.

Marcus.

Then at Vivian’s words.

Then at Elena.

A terrifying possibility formed.

Marcus was not working for Vivian.

Vivian was working for Marcus.

The woman who imprisoned Elena…

Was only a piece.

The real mastermind had been hiding in plain sight.

And now Alejandro knew one thing:

The person who destroyed their lives was someone close enough to shake his hand.

Someone close enough to call him brother.

Someone close enough to betray him.

The war had entered its final stage.

And Marcus Vale had just made his first move.
