Chapter 2 – “The Monster Wearing a Friend’s Face”

The envelope sat in Alejandro Castillo’s hand like a weapon.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Even the officers standing behind him seemed to understand that whatever was inside that paper could be more dangerous than anything they had already discovered.

The abandoned room beneath the east wing was silent except for the faint buzzing sound of an old security camera still blinking in the corner.

A camera that had been recording.

Watching.

Waiting.

For three years.

Alejandro stared at the envelope.

His name was written on the front.

Not printed.

Handwritten.

The handwriting was familiar.

Too familiar.

His fingers tightened.

“Elena.”

She looked at him.

“Do you recognize it?”

Her face immediately changed.

The color drained from her cheeks.

“No.”

But Alejandro knew her too well.

That was not confusion.

That was fear.

“Elena.”

She stepped backward.

“I don’t know.”

He lowered the envelope.

“Look at me.”

Slowly, she did.

“There is nothing in this room that can hurt you anymore.”

Her lips trembled.

“You don’t know that.”

Alejandro’s heart sank.

Because for the first time since he found her, he realized something.

Elena wasn’t only afraid of Vivian.

She was afraid of something that came before Vivian.

Something connected to this room.

Something she had never told him.

A lawyer beside Alejandro carefully stepped forward.

“Mr. Castillo, we should probably open this somewhere secure.”

Alejandro nodded.

But before he could move, Vivian laughed.

Everyone turned.

It was not the confident laugh from earlier.

It was desperate.

Almost unstable.

“You really think you understand what you found?”

Alejandro looked at her.

“No.”

His voice was cold.

“But I know I finally found something you wanted hidden.”

Vivian smiled.

A strange, bitter smile.

“You think Elena is the only victim?”

Elena froze.

Alejandro narrowed his eyes.

“What does that mean?”

Vivian looked directly at Elena.

“You never told him everything, did you?”

The hallway became silent.

Alejandro slowly turned toward his wife.

“Elena?”

She looked away.

That was enough.

His heart sank.

Not because he doubted her.

Because he realized how much pain she had carried alone.

Vivian stepped closer.

“You should ask your wife why she never told you about the night before she disappeared.”

“Enough.”

Alejandro’s voice shook the walls.

But Vivian continued.

“Ask her why she was meeting someone.”

Elena’s eyes widened.

“Stop.”

For the first time, Alejandro heard anger in Elena’s voice.

Not fear.

Anger.

“Don’t use that.”

Vivian smiled.

“There she is.”

The servants watching from the hallway whispered among themselves.

Because they had never seen Elena fight back.

Not once.

Alejandro noticed.

And so did Vivian.

“You spent three years breaking her,” Alejandro said quietly.

Vivian’s smile faded.

“But you forgot something.”

He stepped between them.

“She survived.”

The investigation began immediately.

Within hours, Alejandro’s lawyers took control of the mansion.

Every room was searched.

Every computer was collected.

Every security recording was copied.

And for the first time in three years, the Castillo estate belonged to the truth.

Not fear.

Not manipulation.

Not Vivian.

Elena stayed in Alejandro’s office while investigators worked.

She sat on the sofa wearing one of his jackets.

It was the first time in years she had worn something that belonged to her husband.

And strangely...

That small thing almost broke her.

Because she remembered another time.

A happier time.

Before everything disappeared.

Before the locked door.

Before the silence.

Alejandro entered quietly.

She looked up.

“You should sleep.”

She smiled faintly.

“You sound like you used to.”

He sat beside her.

“I used to tell you that when you worked too much.”

“You hated when I stayed up late.”

“I hated that you forgot to take care of yourself.”

A small silence.

Then Elena whispered:

“I thought I would never hear you say that again.”

Alejandro looked at her.

Pain crossed his face.

“How many nights did you think that?”

She didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

He knew.

“Tell me the truth.”

She looked down.

“I don’t want you to hate yourself.”

“I already do.”

“Alejandro.”

“I spent three years looking everywhere except here.”

His voice cracked.

“I searched airports. Hospitals. Border records.”

He laughed bitterly.

“And she was keeping you ten minutes away from where I slept every night.”

Elena reached for his hand.

“You didn’t know.”

“I should have.”

“No.”

Her voice became stronger.

“You loved me.”

He looked at her.

“And she knew that was your weakness.”

The envelope was finally opened at midnight.

Inside were several documents.

Photographs.

And a flash drive.

The first document made Alejandro’s blood freeze.

It was a property transfer agreement.

Signed three years earlier.

The second document was a legal authorization.

The third...

Was a marriage contract.

Not his and Elena’s.

Vivian’s.

With Alejandro.

A fake contract.

Prepared before Elena disappeared.

His lawyer stared.

“This is impossible.”

Alejandro picked up the paper.

“What?”

“Vivian was preparing to claim your assets.”

Elena looked shocked.

“She wanted his company?”

The lawyer nodded.

“Not just the company.”

He turned the page.

“Everything.”

The house.

The accounts.

The investments.

The Castillo name.

Vivian had not wanted Alejandro.

She had wanted his entire life.

Alejandro looked at the flash drive.

“Play it.”

The lawyer connected it.

The screen flickered.

Then Vivian appeared.

Three years younger.

Standing in this same room.

Talking to someone off-camera.

Her voice was clear.

“Once Elena disappears, he will break.”

Alejandro stopped breathing.

Vivian continued.

“He has always been emotional. He will blame himself.”

A second voice asked:

“And if he finds her?”

Vivian smiled.

“He won’t.”

The recording paused.

Everyone stared.

Then the voice spoke again.

“Because she will never leave the room.”

Elena covered her mouth.

Alejandro felt rage unlike anything before.

But he forced himself to watch.

The recording continued.

Vivian walked toward the camera.

“I waited years for this.”

She whispered.

“He took everything from me.”

Alejandro frowned.

Everything?

What was she talking about?

Vivian continued:

“He chose her.”

The room became colder.

“She was supposed to be nobody.”

Elena looked confused.

Vivian’s voice became filled with hatred.

“She came from nothing, and he gave her everything.”

Alejandro looked at Elena.

Then back at the screen.

“I spent my entire life watching people like Elena get everything they don’t deserve.”

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Finally Alejandro whispered:

“She was jealous.”

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

Everyone looked at her.

“She wasn’t jealous of me.”

A tear fell.

“She hated me.”

The next morning, Alejandro visited Vivian.

She was being held in the guest wing under security.

Not arrested yet.

But no longer free.

She sat calmly drinking coffee.

Almost as if nothing had happened.

“You finally understand.”

Alejandro stood across from her.

“Understand what?”

“That this was never about money.”

He stared.

“Then what was it about?”

Vivian smiled.

“You.”

A long silence.

“You think I wanted your company?”

She laughed.

“I could have taken that from you anytime.”

Alejandro’s eyes narrowed.

“Then why?”

Vivian looked toward the window.

“Because you loved her.”

There it was.

The truth.

Pure hatred.

“You loved Elena in a way you never loved anyone else.”

Alejandro said nothing.

“And I hated that.”

“You destroyed someone because you were jealous?”

Vivian looked back.

“No.”

Her expression hardened.

“Because she made me feel invisible.”

Alejandro almost laughed.

“Do you hear yourself?”

“Yes.”

“I hear someone trying to justify cruelty.”

For the first time, Vivian looked angry.

“You think Elena is innocent?”

Alejandro stared.

“What are you talking about?”

Vivian leaned forward.

“Ask her about her father.”

The room went silent.

Alejandro frowned.

“What?”

Vivian smiled.

“There are secrets in every family.”

She stood.

“And your wife’s family has one that could destroy everything.”

That night, Elena finally told Alejandro the truth.

The truth she had buried.

Before she met him.

Before their marriage.

Before Vivian.

Her father.

His disappearance.

The secret surrounding the Castillo family.

And why Vivian had hated her from the beginning.

Because Elena’s past was not ordinary.

And the woman Alejandro thought he had saved...

Was connected to a mystery that could destroy his entire empire.

Alejandro listened quietly.

Then he asked one question.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Elena looked at him.

“Because I was afraid you would see me differently.”

He took her hand.

“After everything I found today?”

A tear fell.

“I still see the woman I married.”

She cried.

“But Alejandro…”

“What?”

“My past is coming.”

He frowned.

“What do you mean?”

Elena looked toward the dark window.

“Vivian was not the only person who wanted me gone.”

A chill went through him.

“Who else?”

She whispered:

“The person who taught Vivian how to destroy me.”

And somewhere outside the mansion...

A phone rang.

A voice answered.

“She’s been found.”

A pause.

Then another voice replied.

“Then it’s time to finish what Vivian started.”

The call ended.

May you like

And for Alejandro Castillo...

The war had only just begun.
