Chapter 30

|

The morning sun broke through the heavy storm clouds with a brilliant, golden intensity, washing the Tennessee estate in a warm, forgiving light. The storm had passed, leaving the air smelling of ozone, wet pine, and fresh rain.

I stood on the front porch, holding a mug of hot, dark roast coffee, surveying the damage to the property. The front gates were completely ruined, twisted metal hanging uselessly from the stone pillars. The front lawn was deeply scarred by the tires of Thorne's SUV, and the stone fountain in the center of the driveway was shattered.

It looked like a war zone, but to me, it was the most beautiful sight in the world. It was physical proof that the fortress we had built was capable of withstanding the absolute worst the world had to offer.

David Vance drove his sedan up the ruined driveway, navigating carefully around the debris. He parked and walked up the porch steps, looking exhausted but deeply satisfied.

"Morning, Connor," David smiled, accepting a cup of coffee from Amy, who had just stepped out of the front door.

"How is the legal fallout looking?" I asked, leaning against the cedar railing.

"It's a total, unprecedented victory," David reported, taking a sip of his coffee. "The federal prosecutors are moving for immediate asset forfeiture on Thorne's entire portfolio. Because Nora was officially a victim of his systemic abuse and extortion, the court is arranging for a massive portion of those seized assets to be transferred into an untouchable trust for her and Sam as restitution."

"So she won't just be safe," Amy smiled brightly, her eyes shining with joy. "She will be completely independent."

"She will never have to worry about money again," David confirmed. "She is currently working with Detective Vance to formally change her and Sam's legal identities. By the end of the month, Marcus Thorne won't even know her name."

I looked out over the yard. Nora and Sam were walking near the private pond. Sam was holding his stuffed bear, pointing excitedly at a turtle sunning itself on a rock. Nora was smiling—a real, unburdened, radiant smile.

"We did exactly what we set out to do, Connor," Amy whispered, slipping her arm around my waist and resting her head against my shoulder.

"We did," I agreed, kissing the top of her head. The monsters had come to our gates, and the monsters had been broken. Our sanctuary was entirely unbroken.
