Chapter 28

|

The silence that followed my warning was heavy, suffocating, and charged with lethal intent. The wind howled through the shattered French doors, blowing rain across the terracotta tiles between us.

Marcus Thorne stared down the barrel of my shotgun, his mind frantically calculating his odds. He was a man used to buying his way out of consequences, used to intimidating people with his wealth and his violent reputation. But standing in the dark kitchen of my sanctuary, he was stripped of all his systemic power. He was just a desperate, cornered man facing overwhelming kinetic force.

"You won't shoot me," Thorne laughed, a harsh, jagged sound. "You run a charity. You're a bleeding heart. You don't have the stomach for this."

He tightened his grip on his pistol, preparing to raise it.

I didn't hesitate. I didn't warn him again.

I didn't aim for his chest. I aimed slightly lower, pulling the trigger with absolute, mechanical precision.

The deafening roar of the shotgun blast echoed violently in the enclosed space of the kitchen. A cloud of smoke and splintered wood erupted as the heavy buckshot tore through the edge of the butcher-block island and slammed directly into Thorne's right thigh.

Thorne screamed, a high-pitched sound of absolute agony, as his leg buckled beneath him. He collapsed onto the wet tiles, dropping his pistol, clutching his shattered thigh as dark blood began to pool rapidly beneath him on the floor.

I stepped out from behind the island, racking the pump of the shotgun with a terrifying, definitive clack, chambering another round. I walked over and kicked his discarded pistol far across the room, out of his reach.

"I don't have the stomach for cruelty," I stated coldly, looking down at the writhing, pathetic man bleeding on my floor. "But I have an infinite capacity to protect my family."

Suddenly, the blinding glare of red and blue emergency lights washed over the kitchen windows. The wail of police sirens pierced through the storm.

Mike burst through the hallway doors, his weapon drawn, sweeping the room before lowering it when he saw Thorne neutralized on the floor.

"State Troopers are here," Mike announced, looking down at Thorne with absolute disgust. "And Detective Vance just pulled through the gates."

"Get a trauma kit," I ordered, my adrenaline slowly beginning to ebb. "Put a tourniquet on his leg. I want him alive to face the federal indictments tomorrow morning."

The siege was over. The sanctuary had held.
