Chapter 24

|

The forty-eight hours that followed were a masterclass in psychological endurance. The heavy, bruised clouds that had threatened the sky finally broke, unleashing a torrential, relentless summer storm over Franklin. The rain lashed against the massive oak trees, and the thunder rattled the thick glass windows of the sanctuary.

Inside, we established a strict lockdown protocol. The resident mothers and children were moved to the reinforced interior suites on the ground floor. We played movies, baked cookies, and did everything possible to maintain an atmosphere of calm normalcy for the kids, but the adults knew we were standing on a razor's edge.

I spent the entirety of the storm pacing the security control room with Mike. We had armed the perimeter alarms, locked down the reinforced steel gates, and activated the infrared cameras that could pierce through the heavy rain.

On the evening of the second day, Detective Vance finally called.

"We have it," Vance announced, his voice practically vibrating with exhaustion and triumph. "A federal judge just signed the RICO warrants based on David's financial forensics. The FBI is mobilizing a massive strike team. We are hitting Thorne's corporate headquarters, his shell companies, and his primary residence in Nashville simultaneously at dawn."

"Thank God," I breathed a heavy sigh of relief, leaning heavily against the control panel. "It's over."

"Not yet," Vance warned sharply. "Connor, we hit a complication. We had an undercover unit monitoring Thorne's primary residence to ensure he didn't flee before the raid."

"What happened?" I demanded, my grip tightening on the radio.

"Thorne is gone," Vance said grimly. "He slipped the surveillance net about an hour ago. He didn't take any luggage, and he didn't take his private security detail. He left in an untraceable, blacked-out SUV."

The blood rushed in my ears, drowning out the sound of the thunder outside.

"He figured it out," I realized, the horrifying truth settling over me. "He realized the tracker in Memphis was a decoy. He knows the federal warrants are coming, Vance. His network within the police department tipped him off."

"He is a desperate man with nothing left to lose, Connor," Vance shouted over the line. "And he blames his wife for the collapse of his empire. He is heading straight for your sanctuary. I am dispatching State Troopers to your location right now, but in this storm, they are at least thirty minutes away."

"We will hold the line," I promised, my voice devoid of fear, replaced by a cold, absolute resolve. "But you better tell them to bring an ambulance. Because if Thorne breaches my house, he isn't walking out of it."
