Chapter 6 - The Missing Documents

Daniel stared at the open safe, his heart hammering a frantic rhythm against his ribs.
He pulled the steel door wide open. The stack of emergency cash was untouched. The family heirloom watches were still sitting in their velvet boxes. She hadn't robbed him of physical valuables.
She had taken the corporate binders.
Daniel tore the remaining contents out of the safe, tossing them onto the floor. The red binder containing his primary estate planning, his life insurance policies, and the executive succession protocols for Bennett Grand Hotels was gone.
"What the hell are you doing, Vanessa?" he muttered to himself, panic rising in his throat.
He moved to his heavy mahogany desk and began pulling drawers open. Everything looked perfectly organized, exactly how his assistant had left it on Friday.
Then he noticed the bottom drawer. It was slightly jammed.
He yanked it hard, pulling the drawer entirely off its tracks. Tucked all the way in the back, slipped beneath the wooden baseboard of the drawer, was a crumpled, discarded piece of heavy stock paper. It looked like a rejected draft from the printer.
Daniel pulled it out and smoothed it over the desktop.
It was a signature page for a corporate resolution.
He scanned the text, his blood turning completely to ice. It was a proxy transfer agreement. It explicitly granted Vanessa full, irrevocable voting rights over his 51% majority shares in Bennett Grand Hotels in the event of his "medical incapacitation, arrest, or detention by law enforcement."
But it was the date stamped at the top of the page that made the room spin.
The document was dated Thursday, October 12th.

The gala—the night Vanessa pushed Lily down the stairs and provoked him into assaulting her in front of fifty witnesses—was Sunday, October 15th.
She had drafted the contingency paperwork three days before the fall.
