Chapter 14 - The Healing

|

The suburban house belonging to Daniel’s sister was warm, smelling of cinnamon and fresh laundry. It was a stark contrast to the cold, echoing marble of Bennett Hall.

Daniel walked into the sunlit living room. Lily was lying on the plush sofa, her cast propped up on a mountain of pillows, watching a cartoon on the television. Her arm was in a sling, and the bandage above her eye was fresh.

She looked small and fragile, but when she saw him standing in the doorway, her face lit up with a brilliant, gap-toothed smile.

"Daddy!" she cheered, trying to sit up.

"Hey, bug," Daniel smiled, rushing over and dropping to his knees beside the sofa. He kissed her forehead, burying his face in her hair, inhaling the sweet, safe scent of her shampoo. The overwhelming, crushing weight of the last four days finally lifted from his shoulders.

"Is she gone?" Lily whispered, her small hand gripping his shirt.

"She is gone forever, baby," Daniel promised, looking deep into her eyes. "She went to jail. The bad lady can never, ever hurt you again."

Lily let out a small, relieved sigh, relaxing back into the pillows. "Good. I didn't like her."

Daniel let out a wet, genuine laugh, wiping a tear from his eye. "I didn't like her much either, kiddo."

Over the next few months, the Bennett family slowly healed. Daniel sold the massive estate in Lake Forest. The memories there were too toxic, tainted by Vanessa’s cruelty. He bought a beautiful, sprawling modern home in a quiet, gated community closer to the city, ensuring Lily had a fresh start.

The trial was swift and brutal. Vanessa and Julian turned on each other entirely, providing the prosecution with enough evidence to secure maximum sentences. Vanessa was sentenced to twenty-five years in federal prison for conspiracy and child endangerment. Julian received fifteen for corporate fraud.

Daniel threw himself into being a father. He stepped back from the day-to-day operations of the hotel empire, promoting Marcus to COO, ensuring he was home every night to read bedtime stories and help with physical therapy.

When Lily finally got her cast off, they celebrated with a massive pizza party in their new kitchen. She ran across the hardwood floor, a slight limp the only remaining physical evidence of the nightmare, laughing as Daniel chased her with a water gun.

Life was finally peaceful.

Until the letter arrived.
