Chapter 12 - The Trap Springs

"What is this, Daniel?" Marcus Thorne asked from the other end of the table, playing his part perfectly.
"It's a documentary," Daniel said, his eyes never leaving Vanessa. "A behind-the-scenes look at corporate restructuring. Marcus, plug it into the projector, please."
Julian stepped forward, panic finally bleeding into his professional facade. "This is highly irregular! We are in the middle of a formal motion!"
"Plug it in, Marcus," Daniel repeated, his voice dropping into a lethal register that dared anyone in the room to stop him.
Marcus plugged the drive into the table's interface. The massive screen at the front of the boardroom flickered to life.
The video began playing. The high-definition footage of the dark library filled the screen.
Vanessa’s face turned the color of ash. She recognized the room instantly.
The audio kicked in, crystal clear.
"The proxy is drafted. I’ve countersigned the emergency clauses. Once the police place him in custody, the board will automatically recognize you as the acting CEO." Julian’s recorded voice boomed through the boardroom speakers.
The board members gasped in unison.
Julian stumbled backward, his face turning an ugly, mottled red. "This is a fake! This is AI generated!"
But the video continued.
"I'm going to wait until the ballroom is packed. And then, I'm going to push the little brat down the stairs." Vanessa’s cruel, laughing voice echoed over the silent, horrified executives. "A broken leg is a small price to pay for a billion-dollar empire."
The video ended, freezing on Vanessa’s smiling face.
The silence in the boardroom was absolute, crushing, and deafening.
Daniel looked down at the woman he had slept beside for four years. The illusion was completely, permanently shattered.
"You pushed my daughter down a flight of marble stairs for a hotel chain," Daniel whispered, his voice shaking with a rage so profound it felt like a physical weight in the room.
Vanessa didn't cry. She didn't beg. The sociopathic mask slipped entirely, leaving a cold, cornered animal. She stood up, her chair scraping violently backward.
"It was my right!" Vanessa screamed, her voice cracking with fury. "I played the perfect wife! I endured your pathetic, whining child! I earned half of this company, and you were too blind to give it to me!"
Before she could take another step, the doors to the boardroom opened again.

Two uniformed police officers and a plainclothes detective walked into the room.
"Vanessa Bennett and Julian Vance," the detective announced, holding up a stack of warrants. "You are both under arrest for conspiracy to commit fraud, corporate embezzlement, and the attempted murder of a minor."
