Chapter 9 - The Hidden Safe

|

“He’s using the police to flush you out,” Robert said, pacing the living room. “He wants to know if you’ve gone to the authorities about the money laundering. If he suspects we know about Elias Thorne, they will destroy the evidence today.”

“Then we have to go to the FBI right now,” I pleaded, terrified for my daughter's life.

“With what?” Robert countered. “A few screenshots of an altered contract and some digital ledgers? A good mob lawyer will claim Chloe manipulated the software herself since she had admin access. We need hard, physical proof. We need the original forged contract with the wet ink, and we need the source of the dirty cash.”

Chloe suddenly stopped rocking on the sofa. She looked up, her eyes wide with a sudden, terrifying realization.

“The red ledger,” Chloe whispered.

“What red ledger?” I asked.

“Damian doesn't trust digital records entirely. He keeps a physical, handwritten red ledger for Elias’s real deposits. I saw it once when he left his office door cracked open. He keeps it in a floor safe under the Persian rug in his private office.”

Robert stopped pacing. “Do you know the combination?”

“No,” Chloe admitted. “But he doesn't use a digital keypad. It’s an old-school lock. He always kept a master override key taped to the underside of the heavy oak desk drawer. I felt it once while dusting.”

Robert checked his watch. It was 10:30 AM.

“The restaurant is closed on Mondays for deep cleaning,” Chloe added. “Damian plays golf with Elias until 4:00 PM. The place is completely empty right now.”

I looked at my daughter, then at the lawyer. The crazy idea hung in the air, dangerous and desperate.

“We’re going back to The Hearth,” I said.
