Chapter 1 - The Taste of Humiliation

|

I found my daughter crying in the kitchen, eating scraps from dirty plates while her husband smiled and said, “She deserves it.”

I didn’t scream or argue. I didn’t throw a punch, though every instinct inside my fifty-eight-year-old body screamed at me to grab a cast-iron pan and shatter his arrogant jaw.

Instead, I stood frozen in the doorway of the elegant Atlanta restaurant, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs.

“That useless woman deserves to eat leftovers,” Damian Prescott said smoothly, looking me straight in the eyes without a single ounce of shame. “If she can’t do her job properly, then she can learn what it feels like to go hungry.”

Two meters away from him, my daughter Chloe was kneeling on the greasy, black-and-white checkered floor. She was picking up cold rice and torn pieces of chicken that had been left on the dirty plates of strangers.

My name is Margaret Miller. I spent thirty years working as an elementary school teacher in the rougher districts of Baltimore. I thought I knew how to recognize fear. I had seen it in the eyes of neglected children and battered mothers. But I never imagined it would take me months to see it in my own daughter’s eyes.

Chloe was thirty-two when she met Damian. She was a brilliant, independent graphic designer who lived alone in the Richmond neighborhood. She had built her small studio entirely on her own. Ever since her father died when she was eleven, it had just been the two of us. We were a team.

Then Damian arrived. He was thirty-eight, ran this upscale restaurant called The Hearth, always dressed in tailored suits, and never showed up without an expensive bouquet of lilies. He seemed perfect. Now, looking at my daughter shivering on the cold tile, her cheekbones hollowed out and her hair thinning, I realized perfection was just a mask for a monster.
