Chapter 10 - The Daylight Heist

Driving back to The Hearth felt like walking directly into a lion’s den. We parked Robert’s sedan two blocks away in a public parking garage. I insisted Robert stay behind to coordinate with his investigator, but the stubborn lawyer refused.
“I am your legal counsel. If you get caught, I’m the only thing standing between you and a trespassing charge,” Robert said, adjusting his tie.
We approached the back alley of the restaurant in the bright afternoon light. Chloe’s hands were shaking violently as she pulled a silver key from her pocket. Damian had demanded she leave her keys when she fled, but she had secretly made a duplicate months ago.
She slid the key into the heavy metal service door. It clicked.
We slipped inside, locking the door behind us. The restaurant was pitch black, smelling faintly of stale wine, bleach, and roasted garlic. The silence was deafening.
“The office is down the hall, past the walk-in freezer,” Chloe whispered, leading the way.
Every step felt like stepping on landmines. The floorboards creaked under our weight. We reached Damian's private office. Chloe unlocked it and pushed the door open.
The room was lavish, filled with leather chairs, expensive liquor bottles, and a massive oak desk. Chloe immediately went to the Persian rug in the center of the room and dragged it aside, revealing a heavy steel floor safe embedded in the concrete.
“Mom, check the desk,” she urged.
I practically dove under the heavy oak desk, running my fingers desperately along the rough wood of the bottom drawer. Dust coated my fingers. I felt a piece of thick duct tape.
I ripped it off. A heavy brass key fell into my palm.

“I got it!” I gasped.
I handed the key to Chloe. She knelt by the safe, inserted the key, and turned it. With a heavy, satisfying clunk, the steel door hissed open.
