Chapter 17 - The Wiretap

|

Agent Reynolds connected Chloe’s phone to a federal recording device. The room was dead silent as the dial tone echoed through the speaker.

Damian answered on the first ring.

“Chloe,” Damian’s voice was sickeningly sweet, dripping with fake concern. “Baby, please tell me where you are. I’m so worried.”

Chloe took a deep breath, reading from the notepad Robert had hastily written instructions on.

“Damian, I saw the video you posted,” Chloe said, her voice shaking just enough to sound terrified. “Why are you doing this? I didn't steal that money. You know I didn't.”

“Come home, and I’ll tell the police it was a misunderstanding,” Damian purred. “We can go back to how things were. You belong in the kitchen, helping me.”

“I can't go back, Damian,” Chloe pressed on. “Not after what you did to the marriage contract. You added those clauses. You forged my signature to steal my studio.”

There was a long pause on the line. The agents leaned in, holding their breath.

Damian chuckled, a cold, arrogant sound.

“So what if I did, Chloe? Who is going to believe a hysterical, mentally ill wife over a respected business owner? Yes, I altered the contract. Yes, I own your studio. And yes, I wash Elias’s money. But without that red ledger, you have zero proof. I’ll ruin you in court.”

Agent Reynolds pumped his fist in the air.

“Damian,” Chloe said, her voice suddenly losing all its fear, replaced by a spine-chilling calmness. “I’m not a useless woman. And I’m never eating your leftovers again.”

She hung up the phone.

Reynolds grabbed his radio. “All units, this is Lead Agent Reynolds. We have a full confession on tape. Execute the raid on The Hearth. Now.”
