Chapter 8: Tears of Liberation

Just that one sentence.

“Don't ever apologize for trying to survive.”

That sentence acted like a massive sledgehammer, striking a fatal blow that completely shattered the final, fortified emotional wall Emily had desperately built around her wounded heart for two years.

She broke.

She burst into tears, sobbing uncontrollably like a lost child. These were not the quiet, muffled whimpers she usually forced herself to swallow every night after being humiliated by her mother-in-law. These were loud, raw, agonizing sobs of pure release.

The truest tears. Tears of repressed injustice, of swallowed humiliation, and of the profound, overwhelming relief of finally having someone understand and shield her.

All the years of pretending to be strong, all the venomous sarcasm she had been forced to silently digest, now poured out of her all at once like a burst dam.

Daniel didn't offer any more empty words of comfort. He simply wrapped his arms securely around his wife's trembling body, pulling her fiercely into his chest, holding her as tight as he could.

He didn't care that the sticky pink frosting from her blouse was ruining his expensive tailored suit. He buried his face in her messy hair, letting her tears soak through his shirt. He used his solid presence as an unbreakable anchor for her.

For the very first time since she had stepped foot into the prestigious, cold Harper family...

Emily was allowed to cry freely, without hiding, without hurriedly wiping her tears in fear of being judged. She cried in the arms of the man who loved her most.

An hour later.

From upstairs, Margaret heavily dragged two expensive designer suitcases down the wooden stairs, the wheels clattering loudly against the steps. Her face wore its usual cold, arrogant mask, but deep down, there was a faint, pathetic glimmer of hope.

She purposely walked very slowly, making as much noise as possible. In her mind, she still believed that, wielding the authority of a mother, Daniel wouldn't have the heart to watch her leave. She expected him to run out, block her path, drop to his knees, apologize, and beg her to stay.

But he didn't.

Daniel stood leaning casually against the hallway wall, his arms crossed, watching his mother haul her luggage downstairs without making a single move to approach her.

She sneakily glanced over at Emily, hoping to see guilt, remorse, and panic on the face of the lowly daughter-in-law who had caused this family rift.

But Emily didn't even bother to look in her direction. She was standing safely within Daniel's embrace, her eyes gazing out the window, completely ignoring the existence of the cruel woman.
