Chapter 15: The Ambush

You can avoid a toxic person's phone calls, but you cannot always avoid them in public.

It happened six months later, at the annual City Arts Foundation Gala. Daniel had warned Emily they might run into people from his mother's social circle, offering to skip the event entirely.

But Emily had shaken her head.

"I won't spend my life hiding in the house, Daniel. I have nothing to be ashamed of."

She wore a stunning, emerald-green silk dress that flowed elegantly to the floor. She looked radiant, confident, and entirely out of Margaret's shadow.

They were standing near the champagne tower, talking to a local artist, when the temperature in the room seemingly dropped.

Margaret approached.

She was flanked by two wealthy socialite friends, forming a protective barrier of pearls and arrogance. Margaret looked Emily up and down, her eyes narrowing with malicious intent.

"Daniel," Margaret said coldly, completely ignoring Emily's presence. "I see you're still dragging your little charity case to events where she clearly doesn't belong."

The artist they had been speaking to awkwardly excused himself, sensing the hostility.

Daniel's jaw tightened. He stepped forward, ready to shield his wife.

But Emily gently placed a hand on his chest, stopping him.

She didn't shrink. She didn't look at her shoes. She didn't apologize for breathing the same air as the matriarch.

Emily took a calm, deliberate step forward, meeting Margaret's venomous glare with absolute serenity.

"Margaret," Emily said, her voice smooth, polite, and completely devoid of fear. "It is a pleasure to see you looking so well. Though, considering how heavily you rely on other people to validate your self-worth, I imagine you must be exhausting yourself trying to keep up appearances tonight."

Margaret's mouth fell open in genuine shock. Her two socialite friends exchanged wide-eyed, scandalized glances.

"Excuse me?" Margaret hissed, her face flushing crimson. "How dare you speak to me like that?"

"I am speaking to you exactly the way you taught me to," Emily replied with a soft, pitying smile. "You taught me that respect is earned, not demanded. And frankly, Margaret, you haven't earned mine."

Emily didn't wait for a response. She didn't need one.

She calmly turned to Daniel, looped her arm gracefully through his, and smiled.

"Shall we look at the auction items, darling? The air over here has become incredibly stale."

Daniel stared at his wife in absolute awe. He nodded, a proud, brilliant smile breaking across his face.

As they walked away, leaving Margaret speechless and humiliated in front of her peers, Daniel leaned down and whispered in Emily's ear.

"Remind me never to get on your bad side."

Emily laughed, squeezing his arm. The mouse had finally realized she was a lion all along.
