Chapter 1: The Perfect Plan

The front door of the villa swung open with a soft, gentle click, cautious enough to barely make a sound.

Daniel Harper stepped inside, his arms wrapped around a massive, vibrant bouquet of wildflowers. They were meticulously wrapped in brown kraft paper, exuding a rustic yet undeniably elegant charm. The golden sunlight of the late afternoon streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the villa, casting warm, dancing reflections across the polished marble floor.

He smiled to himself as he quietly shut the heavy oak door, his mind already racing ahead, imagining Emily's surprised, melodic laugh and her radiant smile.

His wife, Emily, had always insisted that birthdays didn't really matter, that they were just another ordinary day on the calendar. Yet, Daniel knew her secret: every single year, she would secretly cry tears of happiness whenever someone remembered and went out of their way to surprise her. She was a woman with a deeply sensitive heart, always yearning for love but terrified of being a burden to anyone.

This year, Daniel had planned absolutely everything to perfection.

The vibrant flowers resting in his arms.

A reservation at her absolute favorite, quaint Italian restaurant, the one with the wooden balcony overlooking the shimmering harbor lights at night.

A quiet, relaxing weekend getaway to the countryside, all arranged and paid for.

And most importantly, the strawberry vanilla cake. It was an intricately decorated masterpiece that Emily had stopped to admire through the glass window of a famous bakery exactly three weeks earlier. She hadn't even realized he was standing right behind her, noting the longing in her eyes, and quietly placing a deposit for it the very next day.

To pull off the ultimate surprise, he had left the house very early that morning, dressed in a sharp suit, pretending he had an emergency corporate meeting he couldn't miss. He wanted every single detail of this day to unfold like a dream.

"Happy birthday, sweetheart!"

Daniel called out loudly, his voice brimming with excitement and a wide grin stretching across his face.

But the only response he received was an eerie, suffocating silence. There were no hurried footsteps rushing out to greet him, no gasp of joy.

Just a strange, heavy stillness enveloping the house.

And then, from the direction of the living room, a thin, scraping sound reached his ears. It was the frantic, abrasive noise of rough fabric scrubbing desperately against cold marble.

May you like

Daniel frowned, a sudden spark of unease igniting in his chest. Holding the bouquet tightly, he took slow, measured steps around the corner of the hallway and entered the living room.

The bright smile vanished from his face in a fraction of a second.
