Chapter 4 - The Unseen Housemaid

|

Maya had spent her entire life learning how to be invisible. In the homes of the ultra-wealthy, a good maid was treated like a piece of furniture—present, functional, but entirely unobserved.

When she had been assigned to the ground-floor master suite to care for the newly paralyzed Damian Russo, the head housekeeper had given her strict instructions: "Do not speak unless spoken to. Do not stare at his legs. Clean the room and leave."

But Maya was observant. She noticed the small, telling details that the doctors, the guards, and even the beautiful, cold fiancée missed.

She noticed that the soles of Damian’s slippers were slightly scuffed, as if they had been dragged across the carpet in the middle of the night. She noticed that the supposedly heavy dosage of narcotics in his pill organizer was untouched, secretly discarded in the bathroom trash wrapped in tissue paper.

And she had seen his leg twitch.

As Maya polished the mahogany dresser on the far side of the room, she watched Vivian sweep out of the suite, her heels clicking aggressively against the hardwood floor.

Once the heavy doors clicked shut, the room fell into a heavy, oppressive silence.

Damian sat in his wheelchair, his eyes closed, his breathing ragged as he fought another agonizing cramp in his calf. The tension in his broad shoulders was palpable.

Maya set down her polishing cloth. She walked quietly over to the small medical supply cart and retrieved a hot compress, activating it with a sharp twist of her hands.

She knelt beside his wheelchair, keeping her eyes respectfully lowered.

"What are you doing?" Damian’s voice cracked like a whip in the quiet room, sharp and defensive.

Maya didn't flinch. "You are experiencing a severe muscle spasm in your lower left calf, sir. The restricted blood flow from remaining seated for so long is causing lactic acid buildup."

"I am paralyzed," Damian sneered, testing her. "I can't feel anything."

Maya gently lifted the edge of the wool blanket. She didn't look at his face. "I am just a maid, Mr. Russo. I don't know anything about spinal injuries. But I do know that if you don't apply heat to a cramped muscle, it will eventually tear."

May you like

Without waiting for his permission, she pressed the hot compress firmly against his calf.

Damian let out a sharp, involuntary hiss as the heat penetrated his skin, relaxing the knotted muscle. He stared down at the top of her head, realizing that his secret had been compromised by the one person he had completely ignored.
