Chapter 19 - The Purge

|

The shock in the room was absolute. The capos stared at their boss, completely paralyzed by the revelation. The elaborate lie had worked flawlessly, drawing the rats out from the shadows and into the blinding light.

Silas realized his fate in a fraction of a second. With a panicked, desperate yell, he reached under his suit jacket, drawing a heavy handgun, aiming it directly at Damian’s chest.

He never even pulled the trigger.

Two suppressed shots echoed through the grand hall.

Silas’s eyes went wide. He dropped the gun, clutching his chest, before collapsing face-first onto the polished hardwood floor, dead before he stopped sliding.

Carlo slowly lowered his smoking weapon, his face devoid of any emotion. He looked at the remaining capos, challenging them to object. Not a single man moved.

Damian didn't even flinch at the sound of the gunfire. He slowly turned his head to look at Vivian.

She was backed into a corner, trembling so violently her knees were knocking together. Tears streamed down her perfectly contoured face.

"Damian, please," Vivian sobbed, falling to her knees. "He made me do it! Silas threatened me! I loved you! I was just trying to survive!"

Damian walked toward her. His steps were slow and deliberate. He stopped a few feet away, looking down at the woman who had ordered funeral flowers while he was still breathing.

"You are a terrible actress, Vivian," Damian said coldly.

He didn't raise his voice. He didn't order his men to shoot her. Death was too quick, too merciful for a betrayal this deep.

"Carlo," Damian commanded, not taking his eyes off his former fiancée.

"Yes, Boss."

"Strip her of everything," Damian ordered. "Empty her bank accounts. Take her cars, her jewelry, and the deed to her apartment. Throw her onto the street with nothing but the clothes on her back. If she ever sets foot in New York again, bury her."

Vivian shrieked, sobbing hysterically as two of Carlo’s massive enforcers grabbed her by the arms and dragged her kicking and screaming out of the grand hall.

Damian turned back to the mahogany table, looking at the stunned faces of his inner circle.

"The crown was never empty," Damian stated quietly. "Remember that."
