Chapter 20 - The Next Move

The estate was quiet again, but it was a different kind of silence. It was the peaceful, heavy silence of a cleansed kingdom.
Damian stood on the stone balcony of the master suite, looking out over the dark, rain-soaked gardens. The pain in his ribs still ached, but the suffocating weight of betrayal was finally gone. He took a deep breath of the cold October air.
He heard soft footsteps behind him.
Maya stepped onto the balcony, holding a heavy wool blanket. She didn't say a word. She simply draped it over his broad shoulders to protect him from the chill.
Damian turned around, looking down at the woman who had stood between him and the wolves.
"It's over," Damian said softly.
"For now," Maya replied, her dark eyes reflecting the moonlight. She stepped back, folding her hands in front of her. "I packed my bags, Mr. Russo. I can leave tonight."
Damian frowned, a sudden, sharp panic gripping his chest. "Leave? Why would you leave?"
"The job is done," Maya said softly, refusing to look him in the eye. "You don't need a nurse or a secret keeper anymore. You are the king again."
Damian reached out, gently lifting her chin so she was forced to look at him.
"I don't need a maid," Damian murmured, his thumb brushing lightly across her cheek. "I need a partner. I need the only person in this entire city who saw me at my weakest and didn't run. Stay with me, Maya."
Maya’s breath hitched. She looked into his eyes, seeing the genuine, raw vulnerability of a man who trusted no one else in the world.
She slowly reached up, placing her hand over his. "Okay. I'll stay."
Damian smiled, a real, genuine smile, and leaned down, his lips inches from hers.
But before the kiss could connect, the heavy mahogany doors of the suite burst open.
Carlo stood in the doorway, his face pale, his breath ragged. He held a ringing satellite phone in his hand.
"Boss," Carlo gasped, looking terrified. "It’s the Chicago syndicate. They know about the purge. They’ve breached the eastern ports, and they’ve taken your brother hostage."

Damian froze. The warmth of the moment vanished, replaced instantly by the cold, brutal reality of his world.
He looked at Maya, the fire igniting in his eyes once again. The king had reclaimed his throne, but the war had just begun.
