Chapter 20 - The Unseen Horizon

|

Six months later.

A secluded, sun-drenched villa overlooking the deep blue waters of the Amalfi Coast in Italy. The air was filled with the sweet scent of blooming lemon trees and salty sea breeze.

Elena sat on a stone terrace, gently rocking a wooden bassinet with her foot. Inside, little Luca slept peacefully, dressed in a soft white linen onesie, his tiny fingers curled into tight fists.

Elena took a sip of fresh espresso, feeling a deep, quiet peace she had never known in her past life. Her legal battles in New York were finished. The Moretti name was ruined, Matteo was serving his time in a upstate prison, and she had successfully reclaimed her life, her fortune, and her freedom.

Suddenly, a quiet chime echoed from her stone coffee table.

It was a brand-new, unregistered satellite phone—a line that only three people in the entire world possessed: Carol, Dante, and herself.

Elena picked up the phone and swiped to answer. "Hello?"

"Elena," Dante Bellarosa’s voice came through, sounding sharp and strangely tense. "Are you alone?"

Elena’s hand froze. The serene warmth of the Italian morning suddenly felt a little colder. "I’m on the terrace with Luca. What’s wrong, Dante? Is it Matteo?"

"No," Dante replied quietly. "Matteo’s still in prison. But an hour ago, a secret appeal was filed in the Second Circuit Court of Appeals."

"An appeal? On what grounds? He signed a full confession."

"He didn't file it," Dante revealed, his tone heavy with warning. "His father’s old allies did. They found a technicality in the chain of custody for your digital archive. And Elena... someone just paid off a guard at Bellevue Hospital to retrieve the original security footage from the night you were brought in."

Elena stood up slowly, her heart pounding against her ribs as she walked to the edge of the stone balcony, scanning the winding, empty coastal road below her villa.

"Why would they want that footage now?" Elena whispered.

"Because," Dante said, "there was someone else standing in the shadow of the hospital lobby when Enzo carried you in. Someone who wasn't registered on any CCTV feed. Someone who has been waiting six months for the Moretti empire to fall so they could take what's left."

Elena gripped the stone railing, her eyes narrowing as a dark sedan with tinted windows slowly pulled to a stop at the bottom of her private driveway.

"Dante..." Elena murmured, her voice steadying as the driver's side door of the distant car slowly swung open. "Who is it?"

"I don't know yet," Dante warned. "But they know where you are."
