Chapter 13 - The Interrogation

|
At 2:00 p.m. on the fifth day, Detective Miller of the NYPD Domestic Violence Unit walked into Elena’s hospital room. He was a veteran cop with graying hair and eyes that had seen too much human cruelty.
Carol Hartwell stood on one side of the bed. Dante’s private investigator stood quietly near the door.
Detective Miller pulled up a chair, pulled out an audio recorder, and set it on the tray. "Mrs. Moretti, I need to take your official statement regarding the incident on November 9th. Are you feeling well enough to speak?"
Elena looked at Carol, who gave her a reassuring nod.
"Yes, Detective," Elena said clearly.
"Your husband, Matteo Moretti, claims that you suffered a fainting spell due to your pregnancy and fell against the marble island in your kitchen," Miller read from his notes. "Is that what happened?"
Elena didn't hesitate for a single second.
"No," Elena replied, her voice ringing clearly across the room. "I did not faint."
"Can you describe the events of that evening?"
"I came home early because I was suffering from severe morning sickness," Elena testified calmly. "I fell asleep in the master bedroom. At approximately 6:30 p.m., my husband entered the room holding a stack of financial documents. He was screaming, accusing me of betraying him and his family."
"Did you take those documents?" Miller asked.
"I had never seen them before," Elena said. "I tried to explain that to him. I tried to stand up. He grabbed my left arm—which left the bruising you documented—and struck me across the face with his open hand, knocking me backward into the kitchen island."
Miller scribbled furiously in his notebook. "Did he offer aid?"
"He looked down at me bleeding on the floor, picked up a glass of scotch, and called his driver," Elena said, her eyes ice-cold. "He told the driver I fell, instructed him to take me to a private clinic, and went out for a steak dinner."

Detective Miller stopped writing. He shut his notebook and clicked off the tape recorder.
"Thank you, Mrs. Moretti," Miller said softly. "That’s all I need."
