Chapter 19 - Reclaiming Freedom

|

Two weeks later, the morning sun broke warmly over Manhattan.

Outside Bellevue Hospital, a fleet of news vans had gathered, but Dante Bellarosa’s security team expertly routed a black SUV to a private underground exit.

Elena stepped out of the hospital sliding doors, breathing in the crisp autumn air. She wore an elegant beige wool coat, her dark hair falling softly over the faint, healing scar near her right ear. Her left arm rested securely underneath her bump.

Luca was eight months along now—healthy, strong, and kicking regularly.

Carol Hartwell opened the rear door of the SUV for her. "Everything is set, Elena. The court granted full temporary custody and a complete restraining order against Matteo."

"And the financial settlement?" Elena asked, sliding into the leather seat.

"Matteo signed over his entire personal trust to a private account held exclusively for Luca," Carol smiled warmly. "He pled guilty to felony assault yesterday morning. He’s looking at seven years."

"And Don Antonio?"

"Indicted on federal RICO charges thanks to Vivian's testimony and your archive," Dante added from the front passenger seat. "The old man was arrested at his home in Bay Ridge an hour ago. The Moretti syndicate is officially extinct."

Elena leaned back against the headrest, looking out at the city skyline as the SUV pulled onto the highway.

For four long years, she had lived inside a gilded cage, surrounded by violent men, fake smiles, and dangerous lies. She had survived a skull fracture, a ruthless betrayal, and a nightmare that almost took her child's life.

She looked down at her hands. They were no longer trembling.

"Where to now, Mrs. Moretti?" the driver asked.

Elena felt a warm, unmistakable kick beneath her palm. A faint, triumphant smile touched her lips.

"To the airport," Elena said softly. "We’re going home."
