Chapter 34 - The Mother's Pride

Evelyn arrived the next morning for our usual Saturday coffee, letting herself in with her spare key. She found me sitting at the kitchen island, buried under a pile of quarterly performance reviews for the new regional directors.
“You just got back yesterday,” Evelyn scolded lightly, taking the coffee pot and pouring herself a mug. “Can you not take a single weekend off to let your body rest?”
“The Seattle office had a massive victory last night,” I smiled, ignoring her scolding and taking a sip of my own coffee. “The national rollout is actually working, Mom. The system is catching them.”
Evelyn stopped wiping the counter and looked at me. She didn't look at the paperwork, or the impressive corporate title printed on the folders. She looked directly into my eyes, searching for the exhausted, terrified girl she had pulled out of a nightmare five years ago.
She found absolutely nothing but fierce, unyielding strength.
“I always knew you were incredibly smart,” Evelyn said softly, sitting on the stool across from me. “But I never realized exactly how terrifyingly formidable you could be.”
“I learned from the best,” I replied, reaching across the marble counter to squeeze her hand. “I learned from the woman who threatened to completely destroy a man simply because he was standing between her and her daughter.”
Evelyn smiled, a deep, genuine expression of profound pride.
“You don't need me to protect you anymore,” she whispered, her voice thick with emotion.
May you like
“No,” I agreed quietly, holding her gaze. “I don't need you to protect me. But I will always want you here to share the victory.”
We sat together in the bright, sunlit kitchen, drinking our coffee in comfortable, unbroken silence. The war was officially over, the battle lines were completely redrawn, and we were the undeniable victors.
