Chapter 25 - The Milestone

|

The lobby of our new recovery center was flooded with bright, natural sunlight. I stood near the reception desk, reviewing a stack of finalized intake protocols, when the glass doors slid open. Sarah Jenkins walked in.

She looked completely different from the terrifying reports Maya had filed three months ago. She was standing completely upright, her color had returned to a healthy, vibrant flush, and she was wearing a sharp, professional blazer.

“Emily,” Sarah said, walking directly toward me and extending her hand.

“Sarah, it is incredibly wonderful to see you looking so well,” I smiled, shaking her hand firmly. “How are you feeling?”

“I am feeling like I finally woke up from a terrible, suffocating nightmare,” she replied, her voice steady and full of profound conviction. “I came to drop off the final signed divorce decrees for the legal team. It is officially over. The judge granted me full possession of the house and completely froze his access to my retirement accounts.”

“That is a massive victory. You fought incredibly hard for this.”

Sarah looked around the beautiful, welcoming lobby, her eyes shining with unshed tears.

“I didn't fight alone,” she corrected softly. “If Maya hadn't sent the police to my house that day, I genuinely believe I would have died in that bed. He had completely convinced me that my pain was imaginary and that I was just being a burden. This program didn't just save my bank account, Emily. It saved my sanity.”

I felt a heavy, overwhelming surge of emotion lock my chest. This was exactly why I had fought the executives in the boardroom. This was why I endured the endless administrative battles to fund the legal wing.

“You were never a burden, Sarah,” I told her, making direct, unyielding eye contact. “Your body was asking for help, and he weaponized your vulnerability. But you are safe now. You own your life again.”

Sarah wiped a single tear from her cheek and smiled brilliantly.

“Yes, I do. Thank you for building this place.”

She turned and walked toward the legal wing, her footsteps strong, even, and entirely free.
