Chapter 21 - The Subpoena

|

The heavy, certified envelope arrived at my office on a Tuesday afternoon. The return address belonged to a federal bankruptcy court. I sat at my desk, staring at the thick manila package for a long time before finally slicing it open with a silver letter opener.

Inside was a massive stack of legal documents detailing the final, catastrophic liquidation of the Keystone restaurant group. Ashley’s reckless financial mismanagement, compounded by the heavy restitution she owed for her fraud convictions, had completely destroyed the remaining foundations of the Daniels family empire.

Maya walked into the office, carrying a tray of iced coffees. She saw the documents spread across my desk and stopped in her tracks.

“Are they trying to drag you back into court?” Maya asked, her protective instincts immediately flaring.

“No,” I replied, scanning the summary page. “This is just a formal notification. Because my trust was briefly listed in their fraudulent collateral documents five years ago, the court is legally required to inform me of the final asset dispersal. The restaurants are being auctioned off piece by piece to pay their creditors.”

“How does it feel?”

“How does what feel?”

“Watching the people who tried to destroy you lose absolutely everything,” Maya said, sitting down and handing me a coffee.

I leaned back in my ergonomic chair, adjusting my posture to alleviate the slight pressure on my lower back. I thought about Ashley, sitting in a minimum-security prison. I thought about Colin, living in a heavily restricted halfway house, completely stripped of the wealth and status he once used as a weapon to control me.

I searched my chest for a feeling of triumphant vindication or bitter joy. But I found absolutely nothing. There was only a vast, quiet emptiness where the fear used to live.

“It feels completely irrelevant,” I answered honestly, taking a sip of the cold coffee. “Their ruin doesn't heal my spine. Their bankruptcy doesn't rewrite the past. It is just paperwork, Maya. They are just ghosts haunting their own graveyard. I don't live there anymore.”
