Chapter 18 - Maya's Intervention

|

Maya Chen walked into my office without knocking, dropping a thick manila folder onto the center of my desk. She looked exhausted, her dark hair pulled back into a messy knot, but her eyes were sharp and entirely focused. Maya had been one of the first people to recognize the signs of my own isolation years ago, and she brought that same terrifyingly accurate intuition to her role as the lead intake coordinator for our recovery program.

“We have a massive problem,” Maya said, pulling up a chair and sitting down heavily.

“Good morning to you too,” I replied calmly, opening the folder. “Who is the patient?”

“Her name is Sarah Jenkins. She works in the logistics department on the fourth floor. She had a major abdominal surgery last week. She was discharged three days ago into the care of her husband.”

“And what triggered the alert?”

“She hasn't answered her phone in forty-eight hours. The husband called HR this morning to say she is too heavily medicated to speak to anyone and requested that all her short-term disability checks be routed directly to his personal account instead of their joint checking.”

A cold, familiar dread washed over my skin. The pattern was so entirely identical to my own past that it felt like a ghost walking into the room. The absolute isolation. The strict control of communication. The immediate pivot to financial exploitation while the patient was physically immobilized.

“Did you call the emergency contact on file?” I asked, scanning the documents.

“Her emergency contact is the husband. He isolated her from her sister two years ago.”

I closed the folder, the dull ache in my lower back suddenly feeling like a sharp reminder of exactly what was at stake.

“Call Detective Park,” I ordered, standing up from my desk. “Tell her we need a wellness check at the Jenkins residence immediately. And have legal draft an emergency injunction to freeze those disability payments.”

“I already drafted the injunction,” Maya smiled grimly. “I just need your signature.”

I signed the paper without a single second of hesitation.
