Chapter 8 - The Paper Trail

|

Later that morning, Dr. Shah returned, bringing a woman dressed in a sharp business suit.

"Caroline, this is Priya Nair, the head of our medical records department," Dr. Shah said, gesturing for Priya to step forward.

Priya placed a narrow, organized stack of documents onto my rolling tray table. "We’ve been digging into the history your husband transferred to us," she said, her tone professional but laced with concern. "We have records from three different clinics. Two appear legitimate, though heavily redacted. The third... is highly concerning."

Evelyn leaned forward, resting her elbows on her knees. "Concerning how?"

"It means," Priya said carefully, "that some of these documents were fabricated before they reached our hospital’s server."

I stared at the stack of paper as if it might catch fire. "Fabricated? By who?"

"We don't have a name yet. But the digital footprints are alarming." Priya explained that most modern medical files leave electronic traces—timestamps, user IDs, transmission logs. But several pages in my chart were uploaded as flat PDF scans, bypassing the usual encrypted channels.

"They look official to the naked eye," Priya continued, pointing to a sheet with a clinic letterhead. "But look at this logo. The clinic didn't adopt this graphic design until two years after the date on this report. And this doctor’s signature? He retired three years before this diagnosis was supposedly made."

Small, meticulous mistakes. The kind of errors only a desperate, controlling man playing God with his wife’s body would make.

"Why would Luke do this?" I asked, my voice cracking. "What was the point?"

Dr. Shah exchanged a dark look with Priya before turning back to me.

"Control," Dr. Shah said softly. "And to cover up what he was giving you. Caroline, we found evidence in these forged files that heavy medications were prescribed under your name. Sedatives. And abortifacient drugs."
