Chapter 2 - The Shift in Power

|

That single word—no—barely carried across the sterile room, but it shattered the reality Luke had carefully constructed. It changed who was allowed to speak.

Luke let out a short, dismissive laugh. It was the same chuckle he used at family dinners when I dropped a fork or misspoke. The laugh that made his cruelty masquerade as pity.

"She’s always been dramatic," Luke told the doctor, shaking his head. "I told you, she’s been obsessed with getting pregnant. The grief makes her say things. I carried her to the car myself. Why would I do that if I hurt her?"

Dr. Shah didn't blink. She glanced at the X-ray, then at the intake notes on her clipboard.

"What happened?" she asked me again, completely ignoring him.

I could hear Luke’s heavy breathing beside the bed. For years, he had told me I was broken. He had blamed my diet, my stress, my fragile body for my failure to give him a son. He had beaten it into my head until I stopped questioning why every pregnancy ended in a pool of blood after one of his explosive rages.

"He poured it on me," I said, my voice raspy but clear.

Luke’s chair scraped violently backward against the linoleum.

He lunged forward, but Marissa, the attending nurse, immediately moved between him and the bed. She didn't argue. She simply used her body as a shield and pointed toward the door.

"I need you to step back," Marissa commanded.

"You don't have money," Luke hissed, his voice dropping to a dangerous, quiet whisper meant only for me. "You don't have anywhere else to go."

For years, that sentence had been his ultimate weapon. He controlled the bank accounts. He answered my phone. He had isolated me so completely that I thought I was alone in the universe.

"Is there anyone you trust?" Dr. Shah asked.

Luke answered for me. "No. She has no one."

But I remembered a string of ten digits. A number I had recited in my head every night like a prayer. I looked at the nurse and whispered the phone number.

Luke moved toward the hospital phone, panic finally cracking his facade, but Marissa turned her back to him and started dialing.
