Chapter 18 - The Whistleblower’s Confession

"Caroline," Dr. Mercer's voice crackled through the cheap speaker, sounding older and far more exhausted than the cheerful woman I remembered from seven years ago. "I am so incredibly sorry I couldn't protect you."
Tears pricked my eyes. "You tried to warn my sister. You tried to help."
"It wasn't enough," Dr. Mercer said bitterly. "When you came to my clinic, your husband hacked our intake system. He saw your positive pregnancy test before my nurses even printed the results. He confronted me in the parking lot the day you canceled."
"What did he say to you?" Evelyn asked, leaning close to the phone.
"He told me that his wife was deeply mentally ill," Mercer replied. "He claimed Caroline suffered from severe psychosis and that a pregnancy would drive her to suicide. He showed me forged psychiatric evaluations. They looked flawless. I almost believed him."
"But you didn't."
"No. Because real psychiatric holds leave specific insurance footprints, and I checked. There were none. When I confronted him with the discrepancy, the threats started. He told me he could alter my medical license records. He could make it look like I had prescribed lethal doses of opioids to addicts. He could destroy my life with a few keystrokes."
I felt nauseous. Luke hadn't just controlled me; he had terrorized anyone who tried to pull me out of the dark.
"He's been using a black market pharmacy network to source the abortifacients he fed you," Mercer continued, her voice urgent. "He hides the orders within massive data dumps he manages for his firm. Caroline, he didn't just want to control your body. He was obsessed with playing God. But you need to listen to me carefully."

"I'm listening," I whispered.
"Luke knows you survived. He knows the hospital is investigating. A man like that does not let his property walk away. You cannot leave that hospital until he is behind bars."
