Chapter 16 - Digging into the Past

"David?" I asked, bewildered. "Your husband? What is a high school history teacher going to do?"
Evelyn dialed the number, holding the phone to her ear. "Before David taught history, he spent ten years as an investigative researcher for a private intelligence firm in DC. He knows how to find things that people want buried."
David answered on the second ring. Evelyn quickly explained the situation, reading off the sparse details I knew about Luke’s employment—the name of the regional insurance agency, the address of his office, the supposed business trips.
I watched Evelyn’s face change as David typed frantically on his keyboard on the other end of the line.
"Are you sure?" Evelyn asked into the phone, her eyes locking onto mine. "Check the subsidiary companies."
A long pause. Evelyn’s grip on the phone tightened until her knuckles turned white.
"Okay. Print everything. Send the encrypted files to the email address I gave you." She hung up and turned to face the room.
"Luke doesn't sell home insurance," Evelyn announced, her voice shaking with rage. "The insurance agency he told you he worked for? It’s a shell corporation. It exists on paper, but it doesn't sell policies to homeowners."
"Then what does he do?" Priya asked.
"He’s a data broker," Evelyn said. "David traced the parent company. Luke works for a firm that buys, sells, and manages encrypted medical data for private pharmaceutical companies and private hospital networks."
The puzzle pieces violently locked together.

"He had access," I whispered, the true scale of my husband's power finally dawning on me. "He had access to the back end of the medical servers. That’s how he forged the documents. That’s how he got the abortifacient pills without a prescription."
He hadn't just been abusing a wife. He had been manipulating an entire healthcare system to keep me trapped.
