Chapter 6 - The Watchful House

|

The surveillance system I procured was military-grade and virtually undetectable.

The tiny, high-definition cameras were meticulously hidden inside a heavy brass lamp in the formal dining room, seamlessly integrated into an antique grandfather clock in the main hallway, tucked inside a smoke detector above the grand fireplace, and embedded in the thick wooden frame holding one of our wedding photographs on the mantelpiece.

They did not rely on the household internet. They did not depend on the vulnerable Wycliffe family router. They were equipped with their own cellular uplinks, configured to preserve all video externally to a secure cloud server, and programmed to send an immediate emergency alert if certain medical or physical distress patterns were detected by the software.

Only one other person on earth knew this system existed.

Detective Damon Rourke.

Damon had been my lead investigator and trusted partner during the final, most dangerous years of my prosecution work. He had since been promoted and joined a specialized investigations unit focused heavily on complex financial crimes and domestic abuse cases involving high-net-worth, powerful families.

He knew exactly why I had called him on a secure line. He knew I was terrified. He also knew me well enough to understand that I would never, ever ask for police intervention unless I had already tried every other possible option and deemed my life to be in imminent, lethal danger.

That night, as I sat at the long mahogany dining table, listening to the rain and feeling the weight of Constance watching me while Graham deliberately avoided my eyes, I understood something with terrible, absolute clarity.

They were done waiting. The financial pressure was too great. The trap was springing tonight.

“Try the sauce, Evelyn,” Constance urged softly, gesturing to the glazed chicken.

The meat sat on my ornate plate, glossy and perfect beneath the warm glow of the crystal chandelier. I leaned in slightly and smelled fresh herbs, a hint of bright citrus, and something else. Something warm, earthy, and chillingly unfamiliar hidden deep within the glaze.
