Chapter 13 - The Breach

Constance’s face twisted into a mask of pure, murderous rage.
Realizing that her perfect crime had been entirely captured on film, the last shred of her sanity snapped. She reached down and grabbed the heavy porcelain teapot from the table, intending to finish the job before the police could intervene.
“You poisonous little bitch!” she screamed, raising the scalding pot high above her head.
The heavy, solid oak front doors of the estate exploded inward before she could finish the sentence.
Heavily armed police officers poured into the grand foyer, their weapons drawn and flashlights cutting through the dim light. They were followed immediately by a team of paramedics carrying heavy red trauma bags. Their heavy boots struck the hardwood floor in quick, thunderous steps, swarming into the dining room.
Right behind the tactical team came Detective Damon Rourke. His dark winter coat was soaked with rain, his hair plastered to his forehead, and his sharp eyes instantly locked onto the chaotic scene before him.
He took absolutely everything in within a fraction of a second.
Me, dying on the floor. My swollen, discolored face and blue lips indicating severe anaphylaxis. The spilled, steaming tea on my chest. The ruined, shattered brass lamp. Graham kneeling pathetically nearby. And Constance standing over me, holding the teapot like a weapon.
“Drop it!” Damon roared, his voice echoing off the high ceilings.
Constance froze mid-swing.
“Step away from her right now, or I will drop you where you stand,” Damon ordered, his hand resting securely on his holstered weapon.

For a terrifying second, she looked as though she might throw the boiling teapot at my face anyway out of sheer spite. But then a uniformed officer moved aggressively toward her, and the absolute certainty in Damon’s voice finally broke through whatever aristocratic fantasy she had been living inside.
The teapot slipped from her trembling hands. It shattered violently beside the dining table, splattering hot tea over her expensive shoes.
