Chapter 17 - The Forged Future

Damon opened the file, but before he could pull out a document, I weakly pointed a finger toward my bedside table.
Resting next to a vase of generic hospital flowers from a well-wisher I didn't even know was a plain white envelope. Inside the envelope was a small, encrypted USB thumb drive and a brief, handwritten note from my fiercely loyal forensic accountant.
Everything is organized, verified, and time-stamped. Call me when you are ready to drop the hammer.
I picked up the drive and handed it to Damon.
“They were not only trying to murder me for the massive insurance payout,” I rasped, my throat aching. “They were desperately trying to silence me to keep me from officially reporting what Graham had done with the Wycliffe Capital corporate accounts.”
Damon immediately pulled a sleek laptop from his bag and connected the drive.
The digital information cataloged inside the folders was significantly worse than either of us had originally expected.
Graham had been systematically embezzling and moving dirty money for more than fourteen months. He had fraudulently borrowed against restricted family trust assets. He had made incredibly reckless, illegal investments through private shell accounts. He had brazenly used Wycliffe Capital corporate funds to cover massive, hidden gambling debts connected to several offshore betting platforms.
He had also transferred over three hundred thousand dollars to his mistress, Isabelle Crane, utilizing fake consulting contracts for services that simply did not exist. He had used company money to pay for her luxury apartment lease, her car payments, her exotic travel, and the deposits on private, destination wedding plans they had apparently begun finalizing before I was even in the ground.
But the most chilling discovery on the drive involved the life insurance policy and my last will and testament.
The increased, multi-million dollar death benefit had not been the only legal document Graham had brazenly forged.
He had also attempted to completely alter my will.

He had uploaded a forged copy to his lawyer’s server that legally left the vast majority of my personal, pre-marital assets directly to him.
But Graham had made one final, fatal miscalculation. He severely underestimated me. He did not know that three months earlier, immediately after finding the original forged insurance amendment in his golf bag, I had secretly met with my own fierce estate attorney and legally changed absolutely everything.
