Chapter 15 - The Arrests

|

Constance was arrested next.

She did not go quietly. As the female officer grabbed her arms to cuff her, Constance shrieked like a banshee. She screamed that I had maliciously manipulated the camera footage. She wildly claimed that I had staged the entire scene, intentionally poisoning myself to frame them.

“She’s unstable!” Constance yelled, fighting the handcuffs. “She’s highly dramatic! She’s a vindictive, lying gold digger! Do you know who I am? I will have all of your badges for this outrage!”

I listened from the stretcher, floating in a haze of adrenaline and painkillers, while the cruel, insulting words she had used to belittle me for years finally became public evidence of the unhinged monster she truly was.

Outside, the freezing rain struck my face as they wheeled me down the grand steps and loaded me into the back of the waiting ambulance.

Damon climbed into the back with me, instructing the officer driving to follow closely. As the doors slammed shut, shutting out the chaos of the estate, Damon took a seat beside my stretcher. He reached out and held my unburned hand lightly, incredibly careful not to disturb the IV line they had just inserted.

“You did it, Evelyn,” Damon said softly, his eyes filled with immense relief and professional pride.

I pulled the oxygen mask away from my face just enough to whisper, my vocal cords burning fiercely.

“They planned it,” I rasped.

“I know,” Damon nodded. “We have it all on tape.”

“Don’t let their lawyers say it was a tragic accident. Don't let them spin this.”

“They will certainly try to spin it,” he assured me gently. “But they are going to have a very, very hard time explaining away the video of her pouring boiling tea on you while telling you to die.”

I let the mask slip back over my face, closing my eyes as the medication finally pulled me under. The ambulance siren wailed loudly, carrying me swiftly away from the only home I had ever tried so desperately, and so foolishly, to belong to.

Before I lost consciousness, I made myself one absolute, unbreakable promise.

I would not spend the rest of my life acting as the tragic, broken woman who barely survived the Wycliffe family. I would become the relentless prosecutor who utterly exposed them.
