Chapter 4 - The Safehouse Protocol|

The armored sedan sliced through the damp, neon-lit streets of Chicago, turning down twisting back alleys and unlit industrial corridors to shake off any tail. Elena sat huddled against the far door, her hands wrapped around her mother's stolen recipe notebook. The paper felt fragile, as if one wrong move would crumble her entire life to ash.

Matteo hadn't spoken for ten miles. He stared out the heavily tinted window, his reflection ghostly against the passing streetlamps.

"Where are you taking me?" Elena asked, her voice tight, hovering between exhaustion and raw anger. "I have an apartment. I have a life. You can't just kidnap me because your father shot up a dining room!"

"Your apartment is already burned to the ground, Elena," Luca said coldly from the front passenger seat, not turning around. "If Don Carmine’s men were in your locker, they were in your living room an hour ago."

Elena’s heart slammed against her ribs. "My home?"

"They don't leave loose ends," Matteo said smoothly, finally turning to face her. "Your mother knew that. She spent eleven years making sure you looked like a nobody. A waitress working double shifts, sweeping floors, scraping by. She hid you in plain sight."

"She didn't hide me! She raised me!" Elena shouted, leaning forward, defiance flaring through her terror. "She worked two jobs to buy my school clothes! She taught me how to roll pasta, how to season sauce, how to live with dignity! She wasn't a mobster's secret—she was my mother!"

Matteo’s eyes softened for a fraction of a second, a flicker of genuine pain crossing his harsh features.

"She was both," he said softly. "The night she disappeared from Bellavita twenty-five years ago, she took something from my father’s vault. Something worth more than the restaurant, more than the syndicate's territory."

"The recipe?" Elena asked incredulously. "You're telling me people are dying over a lemon and garlic sauce?"

"Not the recipe itself," Matteo replied, reaching out to gently touch the edge of the notebook in her lap. "What was hidden inside the recipe. Isabella was smart. She knew my father would search every bank, every safe deposit box, every corner of the country. So she encoded the vault’s offshore ledger directly into her dish measurements. Grams of salt, drops of oil, cooking times."

Elena stared down at the handwritten script inside the notebook. Two pinches of dried oregano. Three cloven pieces of garlic.

"She didn't just teach you to cook, Elena," Matteo whispered, his breath catching in his throat. "She made you the safe."
