Chapter 11 - Bloodline|

The concrete stairs descended deep beneath the city streets, cold air rushing up to meet them like the breath of a tomb. At the bottom lay a reinforced steel vault door with an old mechanical combination dial.
Matteo shined his light on the dial. "The numbers, Elena. In the notebook."
Elena opened the worn leather cover with hands that refused to stay still. She flipped past the yellowed pages of pasta dough and marinara sauce until she reached the last page—the lemon garlic butter sauce.
"19... 99... 09... 19," Elena read aloud.
Matteo spun the heavy metal dial. Click. Click. Click.
With a deep hydraulic hiss, the heavy steel door unlatched and swung open, revealing a small, windowless room illuminated by a single flickering fluorescent bulb.
In the center of the room stood a heavy steel table. Sitting atop it was a single black leather binder and a small, vintage cassette recorder.
Elena stepped inside, her eyes wide. "Is that... the ledger?"
Matteo approached the table, opening the binder. His eyes scanned the pages of bank accounts, offshore shell companies, and names—names of judges, senators, police chiefs, and mob bosses spanning three decades.
"This isn't just my father's ledger," Matteo breathed, his voice filled with awe and horror. "This is the entire syndicate's blueprint. It controls everything from Chicago to New York."
Elena reached for the cassette recorder. She pressed the worn plastic PLAY button.
The machine hissed with static for a second before a familiar, warm voice filled the small concrete room.
"If you're listening to this, Matteo... it means I'm either dead, or I had to leave you."
Matteo froze. The flashlight in his hand trembled slightly.
Isabella’s recorded voice continued, soft and dripping with emotion. "I couldn't stay. Carmine found out about us. He gave me a choice: leave the city forever and hide our child, or watch him kill you in front of me."

Elena looked up at Matteo, her throat tight. "Our child?"
Matteo slowly turned his head to stare at Elena, the cold floor seeming to drop out from beneath his feet.
