Chapter 14 - The New Order|

The distraction was all Matteo needed.
As Carmine’s guards instinctively turned their heads toward the flying notebook, Matteo lunged forward, tackling the first guard to the floor and ripping the automatic weapon from his hands.
Gunfire shattered the narrow space, deafeningly loud against the concrete walls.
Luca burst through the doorway from behind Carmine, striking the second guard with a heavy iron pipe.
Carmine stumbled backward, his golden cane clattering against the floor as he lost his balance. He fell heavily against the steel doorframe, clutching his chest, his face turning a sickening shade of grey.
"Matteo..." Carmine gasped, his breath coming in ragged, shallow hitches. "My... my heart..."
Matteo stood over his father, the rifle held firmly in his hands, smoke drifting from the barrel. He looked down at the dying old man with cold, unyielding eyes.
"You built an empire on blood and lies, Father," Matteo said softly. "It ends tonight."
Carmine reached out a trembling, claw-like hand, trying to grab Matteo’s trousers, but his strength failed him. His eyes rolled back, and his head slumped against the steel door.
The king of the Chicago underworld was dead.
Silence returned to the vault, thick and suffocating.
Luca lowered his weapon, breathing heavily, plaster dust covering his black suit. "It's over, Matteo. His men outside will scatter once they hear the Don is dead."
Matteo didn't look at his father's body. He slowly turned to look at Elena, who was standing near the steel table, her body trembling uncontrollably.
"It's over, Elena," Matteo said softly, taking a step toward her. "You're safe now."
May you like
Elena looked at him, then down at the revolver sitting on the floor near her feet.
"Safe from him," Elena whispered, her voice shaking. "But what about you?"
