Chapter 16 - The Hidden Cipher|

The flight across the Atlantic was quiet. Elena sat in the first-class cabin, staring out the window at the endless expanse of clouds below. In her lap lay her mother's recipe notebook, its cover restored and cleaned.

She hadn't taken the five million dollars. She had taken only enough to buy a small apartment in Montmartre and a train ticket to the French countryside.

She wanted nothing that belonged to the De Luca family.

Two weeks passed smoothly.

Elena established a new routine. She woke at dawn, walked to the local boulangerie for fresh bread, and spent her afternoons wandering through the narrow, cobbled streets of Paris, surrounded by people who didn't know her name or her past.

For the first time in her life, she felt a strange, quiet peace.

Until Tuesday morning.

Elena was sitting at a small outdoor café near the Sacré-Cœur, sipping an espresso and watching tourists pass by, when a young boy in a messenger cap approached her table.

"Mademoiselle Rossi?" the boy asked in accented English.

Elena’s heart skipped a beat. She hadn't used her real name since landing in France.

"Yes?" she said cautiously.

The boy handed her a small, wax-sealed envelope and a single white rose before running off into the crowd.

Elena’s fingers trembled as she broke the red wax seal. Inside was a small piece of heavy cream cardstock with handwritten words in elegant, dark blue ink:

The recipe was never about the money, Elena. Check the third drawer of your kitchen cabinet.

— M.

Elena stood up so fast her chair screeched against the cobblestones.
