Chapter 18 - The Mastermind in the Shadows|

I thought the war was over, but a terrible intuition kept gnawing at the back of my mind. I was reviewing the confiscated project ledgers from Julian’s office when I noticed a glaring discrepancy.
The way his shadow funds were moved, the sophisticated psychological manipulation he used on me... it wasn't his doing. Julian was far too cowardly and short-sighted to design such a flawless, long-term trap. Someone had guided him. Someone was pulling his strings.
I brought the files to Eleanor. She was already reviewing the same anomalies.
“I see it too,” Eleanor frowned deeply. “A few years ago, Julian was a nobody. A low-level employee. He rose up too fast, targeted you—an orphan—and suddenly knew how to launder money through offshore ghosts. Someone planted him in your life.”
“To monitor me?” I felt the blood drain from my face.
“Exactly. If the people who kidnapped you 30 years ago realized you were still alive but couldn't show their faces, they would plant a parasite like Julian in your life to ensure you stayed broken, poor, and far away from the Sterling family.”
At that moment, my burner phone buzzed. A text message from an unknown number.
"Come to the federal detention center, Clara. I have a secret you’ll want to buy with your life. About who really paid to dump you at that fire station 30 years ago."
It was Julian.

I gripped the phone tightly. He was facing a massive criminal trial; he clearly wanted to trade this final piece of leverage for a plea deal.
“I’m going to see him,” I said resolutely.
