Chapter 9 - The Anatomy of Revenge|
Raphael’s face went completely blank. It was a reaction Elena knew far too well—it was the look he wore right before he completely destroyed an opponent.
"Where is Nico right now?" Raphael asked quietly.
"Raphael," Catherine warned, standing up instantly. "Do not do what you are thinking."
"I asked a simple question, Catherine."
"And I am giving you legal counsel," Catherine shot back. "NYPD is gathering evidence. If you send Marco or any of your contacts to deal with Caruso extralegal style, you destroy the criminal prosecution and ruin your own life."
Raphael turned to Elena, his voice cold and resolute. "He targeted my family, Elena. He put a substance into your body while you were carrying my child. You expect me to let detectives handle this with subpoenas?"
"Yes," Elena said firmly, looking him straight in the eye. "I do."
Raphael stared at her in disbelief. "He tried to hurt you!"
"And if you go out there and break the law to get revenge, you give him exactly what he wants!" Elena raised her voice, ignoring the slight throb in her head. "He wanted to turn you into a reckless, unhinged violent tyrant. If you end up in a federal courtroom, who protects me then?"
Raphael clamped his mouth shut, his chest heaving.

"I want Nico Caruso brought down," Elena added, her tone dropping to a dangerous whisper. "But I want it done so thoroughly that he spends the rest of his life watching his name erased from this city. We do it with paper, Raphael. Not blood."
Catherine let out a slow breath. "Listen to her, Raphael. She’s smarter than you right now."
