Chapter 11 - Paper Trails|

Over the next twelve days, the paper war intensified.
Catherine hired an elite forensic accounting firm to tear through every financial filing associated with Prestige Hospitality Consulting.
Deep within layered corporate filings in Delaware and the Cayman Islands, they found the missing link: two distinct wires totaling one hundred and five thousand dollars paid to Prestige from an offshore entity called Hudson Meridian.
Hudson Meridian’s sole client was Caruso Development Group.
"It’s a paper trail," Marco reported, dropping a stack of printouts onto Raphael’s desk at Moretti headquarters. "Signed off by a mid-level executive inside Caruso’s acquisitions team."
"Is it enough to arrest Nico?" Raphael asked.
"Not quite," Catherine admitted, entering the office behind Marco. "Nico built enough insulation between himself and Hudson Meridian to claim his executive acted rogue. We need someone inside his circle to break."
That break came from an unexpected quarter forty-eight hours later.
Dana Kessler, the forty-nine-year-old Deputy General Counsel for Caruso Development, requested an urgent, private meeting with federal prosecutors under full whistleblower protection.
Dana had spent twenty years practicing corporate law with unblemished integrity. When news broke that Elena Marlowe had been poisoned with a pharmaceutical compound, Dana remembered an internal email chain she had been accidentally copied on weeks earlier.
She delivered the printed servers directly to the U.S. Attorney’s office.

One email from Nico Caruso to Hudson Meridian’s managing partner read:
The point isn't to kill her. The point is to put Moretti in the hospital emotionally before the terminal vote. If he spends forty-eight hours believing his private life is reachable, he backs off. Keep it nonlethal. I want fear, not a homicide case.
