By midnight, Marco’s team confirmed the worst: the photograph had been transmitted from a burner phone activated near Greenwich, Connecticut—just two miles from Nico Caruso’s family estate.
NYPD officers dispatched to check on Nico discovered his electronic ankle monitor sitting neatly on top of a dresser inside his master bedroom.
Nico Caruso had cut his bracelet and vanished into the rain.
The brownstone was instantly transformed into a fortress. Four armed Moretti security personnel took positions at every entrance, while Marco personally oversaw the control room set up in the basement.
Dr. Reeves was notified, and an emergency medical transport team was placed on standby near the neighborhood.
Elena stood in the middle of the nursery, staring at the painted crib and the soft grey curtains hanging by the window.
Raphael entered quietly, holding two glasses of water. He handed one to her.
"The police have raised a multi-state dragnet," Raphael informed her, his voice low and steady. "Harbors, airports, private airfields—everything is locked down."

"He doesn't want to escape, Raphael," Elena said, looking out the reinforced window into the dark alley below. "If he wanted to flee the country, he wouldn't have sent that photo to my phone. He wants an ending."
Raphael stepped beside her, his jaw set like granite. "Then he’s going to get one. But it won't be the one he thinks."
