Chapter 18 - Cold Realization|

Elena’s heart slammed against her ribs. She set the phone down on the glass table with a slight rattle.
Raphael noticed instantly. "Elena? What is it?"
Without a word, she slid the phone toward him.
Raphael picked up the device. As his eyes scanned the photograph and the message beneath it, the room seemed to drop ten degrees. The quiet, relaxed partner disappeared, replaced instantly by the ruthless chief executive.
"Marco," Raphael said aloud into his smartwatch, bypassing standard dialing.
"Boss," Marco’s voice cracked through the speaker within two seconds.
"Check the exterior perimeter feeds for the terrace over the last seventy-two hours," Raphael commanded coldly. "Find out who set up a long lens on the building across the avenue."
"On it right now. Did something happen?"
"We received a threat. Contact NYPD intelligence unit immediately. Tell them Nico Caruso’s bail conditions have been compromised."
Elena sat quietly, her hands pressed tightly against her bump. The baby kicked—a hard, reassuring movement that grounded her amidst the rising panic.

"He isn't going to stop, is he?" she asked softly.
"He thinks he has nothing left to lose," Raphael replied, sitting beside her and taking her cold hands in his. "When a man like Nico loses his reputation, his money, and his freedom, he stops thinking about consequences."
