Chapter 20

Cassandra stared at the television screen, her chest tight with a heavy, suffocating mixture of regret and sorrow. She watched as the wealthy crowd in the ballroom erupted into genuine, enthusiastic applause for Elena.
"Hey! Wipe down booth four, we got customers waiting!" the gruff diner manager barked, snapping Cassandra out of her trance.
Cassandra blinked, tearing her eyes away from the glamorous broadcast. "Yes, sir. Right away," she mumbled, her voice meek and submissive.
She picked up her plastic bucket of soapy water and her dirty rag, shuffling over to the booth where a family of tired truck drivers had just sat down. She kept her head bowed, avoiding eye contact as she scrubbed the sticky syrup off the table, moving with the quiet, invisible grace of a broken woman.
Far across the city, the charity gala was a massive success. Elena and Alexander danced in the center of the Crystal Pavilion, surrounded by allies and friends who respected them not just for their immense wealth, but for their unbreakable principles.
Alexander pulled Elena close, resting his chin on the top of her head as they swayed to the soft music.
"You changed everything, Elena," Alexander murmured softly. "You took a moment of pure cruelty and turned it into an empire of kindness."

Elena smiled, resting her hand over his heart. She thought of the frightened waitress she had helped that night, the bleeding lip she had endured, and the absolute justice they had delivered. She didn't know where Cassandra Vance was, and she didn't care. The arrogant socialite was a ghost, a cautionary tale of what happens when cruelty meets consequence.
Elena looked up at her husband, perfectly at peace in his arms. The high society of the city had learned a permanent, unforgiving lesson: true power wasn't the ability to crush the weak, but the strength to protect them.
