Chapter 1

The Crystal Pavilion was known across the city as the pinnacle of luxury, a place where the air itself seemed to smell of old money and new power. Tonight, the grand ballroom was hosting the most exclusive charity gala of the season. Chandeliers dripping with thousands of Swarovski crystals cast a warm, golden glow over the billionaires, politicians, and socialites who mingled below. Among the sea of bespoke tuxedos and haute couture gowns moved the invisible army of the service staff, dressed in immaculate black and white uniforms.
Elena was not supposed to be carrying a silver tray tonight. She was, in fact, the silent co-owner of the hospitality empire that managed the Pavilion. But when she saw a young, terrified waitress having a severe panic attack in the kitchen, Elena hadn't hesitated. She handed the girl her designer jacket, slipped a spare white apron over her simple black dress, and took the tray of champagne flutes herself.
"Just breathe, Maria. I'll cover your section," Elena had said with a reassuring smile.

She preferred to stay out of the spotlight anyway. Her husband, Alexander, the notoriously ruthless CEO of the Sterling Conglomerate, was delayed at a board meeting and would be arriving later. Elena enjoyed the quiet anonymity of the apron. It allowed her to observe the true nature of the city's elite without the heavy burden of her own prominent status.
As she navigated the crowded ballroom, gracefully weaving between the wealthy guests, she noticed Cassandra Vance holding court near the center of the room. Cassandra was a socialite whose wealth was inherited and whose cruelty was legendary. She wore a shimmering emerald gown that cost more than most people made in a decade, her voice piercing the elegant hum of the room with a sharp, arrogant laugh. Elena kept her eyes down, balancing the heavy crystal glasses on her tray, intending to walk right past the woman. She had no idea that the next few minutes would irrevocably alter the hierarchy of the city's high society forever.
