Chapter 15

Cassandra Vance was entirely desperate. Her husband had served her with divorce papers the previous evening, completely abandoning her to face the financial ruin alone. Her credit cards were declined at the grocery store, and her personal accounts were frozen by the federal courts pending the bankruptcy investigation.
She had forty-eight hours to vacate her mansion, and she had exactly nowhere to go.
Swallowing the last shred of her massive, toxic pride, Cassandra put on her most modest dress, tied her hair back, and hailed a cheap taxi to the massive, towering glass skyscraper of the Sterling Conglomerate.
She walked into the grand lobby, a place she used to enter like a queen, demanding VIP treatment. Today, she approached the front desk with her head bowed.
"I need to see Elena Sterling," Cassandra whispered to the security guard. "Please. It's a matter of life and death."
The guard looked at her bruised cheek and recognized her immediately from the viral video. He picked up his phone, murmuring quietly into the receiver. After a long, agonizing minute, he nodded.
"Mrs. Sterling has agreed to grant you exactly five minutes," the guard said coldly. "Take the private elevator to the top floor."
Cassandra rode the glass elevator up to the executive suite, her hands shaking violently. When the doors opened, she was escorted by two familiar bodyguards into a massive, sunlit corner office.
Elena sat behind a sleek mahogany desk, looking flawlessly elegant in a tailored white business suit. The red mark on her lip was still visible, a glaring reminder of Cassandra’s crime. Elena did not look up from her paperwork as Cassandra entered.

"You have five minutes, Cassandra," Elena said softly, her voice echoing in the large room. "Speak."
Cassandra collapsed into the chair opposite the desk, instantly bursting into pathetic, heavy tears. "Please, Elena. I am begging you. You have taken my husband, my house, my money, and my friends. I have absolutely nothing left. Please call off your husband. Please stop destroying my life."
