Chapter 7: The Public War
Chapter 7: The Public War
The Devon family didn't go down without a fight. By Monday morning, a coordinated media blitz hit the internet.
A series of professionally produced articles and videos began flooding Facebook and local news sites, painting me
as a vindictive, unstable woman who was using her former police connections to frame an innocent elderly mother
and her grieving husband.
"The Dark Truth Behind the Prosecutor's Marriage," one headline screamed. The articles featured leaked,
heavily edited text messages from years ago, showing me arguing with Daniel about finances, making me look
cold, calculating, and obsessed with money. A verified public relations page funded by Margaret’s brother, State
Senator Vance, began circulating a theory that I had intentionally ingested the almond sauce myself to stage a
dramatic fake attack and secure a massive divorce settlement.
The social media comment sections were vicious. "She's a prosecutor, she knows exactly how to manipulate
the evidence," one top comment read, gaining thousands of likes. "Look at how quickly the police turned up. It was
clearly a setup to ruin a prominent family."
Marcus came to my apartment, looking anxious as he watched the viral metrics climb. "Elena, this is getting
bad. The public pressure is mounting, and the state attorney general is getting calls from Senator Vance’s office
demanding a special independent investigation to take the case away from us."
I sat at my desk, the glow of the computer monitor illuminating the calm smile on my face. I wasn't panicked.
In fact, this was exactly what I wanted them to do. Narcissists always overplay their hand when they feel cornered.
"Let them talk, Marcus," I said, my voice fully recovered, sharp as a diamond. "They think they are
controlling the narrative. They don't realize they are just building a larger audience for the premiere."
"What do you mean?" he asked.
"The public relations firm they hired is using a private server to distribute these leaked documents," I
explained, showing him the tracking code I had embedded in my response emails. "By launching this smear
campaign, they have legally opened the door for a public character defense. Tomorrow, I am holding a press

conference on the steps of the courthouse. I'm not going to argue with them in the comments. I'm going to show the
world what 'breeding' actually looks like when it's caught on camera."
